Target Information
CD18 (integrin beta 2 subunit) is a 90 kDa type I transmembrane protein expressed on all leukocytes. It forms heterodimers with CD11a–d molecules to create leukocyte (β2) integrins such as:
- αLβ2 (CD11a/CD18, LFA-1)
- αMβ2 (CD11b/CD18, Mac-1, CR3)
- αXβ2 (CD11c/CD18)
- αDβ2 (CD11d/CD18)
These integrins mediate cell adhesion and signaling, essential for leukocyte migration and intercellular contact.
Defects in CD18 cause leukocyte adhesion deficiency type I (LAD1), and reduced expression is linked to psoriasiform skin disease. CD18 also mediates cytolysis induced by Mannheimia haemolytica leukotoxin.
