Target Information
The protein encoded by IL-16 is a pleiotropic cytokine that functions as:
- A chemoattractant
- A modulator of T cell activation
- An inhibitor of HIV replication
This cytokine signals via CD4 and undergoes proteolytic processing, yielding two functional proteins:
- The C-terminal peptide functions as the cytokine.
- The N-terminal product may play a role in cell cycle control.
Caspase 3 is reported to be involved in this processing.
Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
