Target Information
Plasminogen is a plasma protein synthesized primarily in the liver. It consists of a single polypeptide chain with a molecular weight of approximately 88.5 kDa and a plasma concentration of 70–200 mg/L. Plasminogen is activated by tissue plasminogen activator, urokinase, or streptokinase to form plasmin. Activation involves cleavage and release of the preactivation peptide. Plasmin comprises a heavy (A) chain containing five kringle domains and a light (B) chain with the active site. It functions as a trypsin-like protease that degrades fibrin, playing a critical role in fibrinolysis. Defects in plasminogen can lead to reduced fibrinolytic activity and result in recurrent thrombosis, thrombophlebitis, or pulmonary embolism.
