Target Information
The Aromatase (CYP19A1) gene encodes a member of the cytochrome P450 superfamily of enzymes. These monooxygenases catalyze reactions involved in drug metabolism and the synthesis of cholesterol, steroids, and other lipids. Aromatase localizes to the endoplasmic reticulum and catalyzes the final steps of estrogen biosynthesis through three successive hydroxylations of the A ring of androgens. Mutations in this gene can lead to altered aromatase activity, affecting estrogen levels and related physiological processes. Two transcript variants are known.
