The 4EBP1 gene encodes a translation repressor protein that interacts with eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E (eIF4E), inhibiting complex assembly and repressing translation. Phosphorylation of 4EBP1 in response to signals such as UV irradiation or insulin promotes dissociation from eIF4E, thereby activating mRNA translation.
