Target Information
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis and consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit, composed of 4 RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins. The S6 ribosomal protein, encoded by this gene, is part of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S6E family. It serves as a major substrate for multiple protein kinases, with phosphorylation of C-terminal serine residues induced by stimuli such as growth factors and mitogens. Dephosphorylation occurs during growth arrest. This protein is implicated in the regulation of cell growth and proliferation by influencing selective mRNA translation. Multiple processed pseudogenes are dispersed throughout the genome.
