Target Information

Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis and consist of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits include 4 RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins. The S6 ribosomal protein, encoded by this gene, is part of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S6E family. It is a major substrate for multiple protein kinases that phosphorylate its C-terminal serine residues. Phosphorylation is induced by growth factors, tumor-promoting agents, and mitogens, while dephosphorylation occurs during growth arrest. This protein may regulate cell growth and proliferation through selective translation of specific mRNA classes. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene exist throughout the genome.
