Target Information
Bone Morphogenic Proteins (BMP) are members of the TGF-beta superfamily that regulate bone and cartilage formation. Mature BMPs are 30–38 kDa proteins with a TGF-beta-like cysteine knot structure. BMP2 promotes bone formation by activating the bmp-2 gene and influences osteoblast and stromal cell proliferation. BMPs also play roles in cell differentiation, apoptosis, morphogenesis, and dorsal/ventral patterning. They interact with type II and type I receptors to activate Smad signaling pathways.
