Target Information

Human growth hormone (hGH) belongs to the somatotropin/prolactin family of hormones that play key roles in growth regulation. The GH1 gene, together with four related genes, is located on chromosome 17 and exhibits high sequence identity among them. Alternative splicing produces five isoforms (19–24 kDa).
hGH is secreted by somatotroph cells in the pituitary and acts via cytokine receptor family membrane receptors. It stimulates the liver and other tissues to secrete IGF-1, promoting body growth, myoblast differentiation and proliferation, and enhancing amino acid uptake and protein synthesis.
Mutations or deletions in the GH1 gene can result in growth hormone deficiency and short stature.
