Target Information
The protein encoded by the BCL-X gene belongs to the BCL-2 protein family. Members of this family form hetero- or homodimers and act as anti- or pro-apoptotic regulators involved in various cellular activities. These proteins are located at the outer mitochondrial membrane and regulate the opening of the voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC). VDAC controls mitochondrial membrane potential, reactive oxygen species production, and cytochrome C release, all of which are key in apoptosis induction. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding two isoforms: the longer isoform acts as an apoptotic inhibitor, while the shorter isoform functions as an apoptotic activator.
