Target Information
The protein encoded by the BCL-X (BCL2L1) gene belongs to the BCL-2 protein family. Members of this family form hetero- or homodimers and act as anti- or pro-apoptotic regulators involved in a wide range of cellular processes.
These proteins are localized at the outer mitochondrial membrane and regulate the voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC), which controls mitochondrial membrane potential, reactive oxygen species production, and cytochrome C release — key steps in apoptosis.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding two isoforms: the longer isoform inhibits apoptosis, while the shorter isoform promotes it.
