Target Information
The protein encoded by the BCL-X gene belongs to the BCL-2 protein family. These family members form hetero- or homodimers and act as anti- or pro-apoptotic regulators involved in various cellular activities.
BCL-X proteins are located at the outer mitochondrial membrane, regulating VDAC channel opening, which in turn controls mitochondrial membrane potential, reactive oxygen species production, and cytochrome C release—key inducers of apoptosis.
Alternative splicing generates multiple transcript variants encoding two isoforms:
- The longer isoform acts as an apoptotic inhibitor
- The shorter isoform acts as an apoptotic activator
