Target Information
The protein encoded by the BCL-X gene belongs to the BCL-2 protein family. Members of this family form hetero- or homodimers and act as anti- or pro-apoptotic regulators involved in diverse cellular activities. These proteins are localized at the outer mitochondrial membrane and regulate VDAC opening, which controls mitochondrial membrane potential and the production of reactive oxygen species. This process influences cytochrome C release, a key inducer of apoptosis.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding two isoforms — the longer isoform acts as an apoptotic inhibitor, while the shorter isoform acts as an apoptotic activator.
