Target Information
IL-6 is a gene that encodes a cytokine involved in inflammation and B cell maturation. The protein acts as an endogenous pyrogen, inducing fever in autoimmune diseases or infections. It is primarily expressed at inflammation sites, secreted into serum, and triggers inflammatory transcriptional responses via the interleukin 6 receptor, alpha. IL-6 is implicated in various inflammation-associated diseases, including susceptibility to diabetes mellitus and systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Elevated IL-6 levels have been observed in viral infections such as COVID-19 (caused by SARS-CoV-2). Diseases associated with IL6 include Kaposi Sarcoma and Systemic Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis.
