Target Information
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form that accumulates in the cytosol and becomes active (17 kDa) upon cleavage by caspase-1 following inflammasome activation. IL-1β is secreted via a non-classical pathway and signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors, shared with IL-1α. Its activity is regulated by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA), which competitively inhibits receptor binding. IL-1β plays a critical role in innate immune defense and inflammation, and elevated levels are associated with chronic inflammatory diseases.
