Target Information

IL-1 alpha (Interleukin-1 alpha) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. IL-1 alpha is coded by the IL1A gene and signals through two receptors, IL-1RI and IL-1RII, both shared with IL-1 beta.
Located on chromosome 2q13, IL-1 alpha plays a key role in innate host defense by inducing proinflammatory cytokine production and acute-phase responses.
Its activity is regulated by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA), which inhibits receptor binding competitively.

IL-1 alpha participates in immune responses, inflammation, and hematopoiesis. It is produced as a proprotein by monocytes and macrophages, processed upon cell injury, and can induce apoptosis.
The IL1A gene forms part of a cytokine gene cluster on chromosome 2, affecting NF-kappaB and MAPK pathways. IL-1 alpha also stimulates IL6 and COX-2 (PTGS2) expression and enhances nitric oxide (NO) production.
Elevated IL-1 alpha levels are associated with chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and multiple sclerosis.
