Target Information
The CDKN2A (p16INK4a) gene produces multiple transcript variants differing in their first exons.
Two isoforms act as inhibitors of CDK4 kinase, while another variant encodes an alternate open reading frame (ARF) that stabilizes the tumor suppressor protein p53 by interacting with MDM2, preventing p53 degradation.
Despite structural differences, these variants share a role in regulating cell cycle G1 progression through CDK4 and p53 pathways.
CDKN2A is frequently mutated or deleted in various tumors and functions as a critical tumor suppressor gene.
