Target Information
Bone Morphogenic Proteins (BMPs) are members of the TGF-beta superfamily that influence bone and cartilage formation. Mature BMPs are 30–38 kDa proteins with a TGF-beta-like cysteine knot structure. BMP2 plays a key role in osteogenesis, stimulating bone matrix protein production and regulating stromal and osteoclast cell proliferation. BMPs also participate in visceral development, affecting cell proliferation, differentiation, and morphogenesis. Like TGF-beta, BMPs bind to a type II receptor, which recruits a type I receptor to activate the Smad signaling pathway.
