Target Information
Bone Morphogenic Proteins (BMPs) are members of the TGF-beta superfamily that influence bone and cartilage formation. Mature BMPs (30–38 kDa) adopt a TGF-beta-like cysteine knot structure. BMP2 activation is linked to increased bone formation and regulation of stromal and osteoclast proliferation. BMPs also play crucial roles in cell proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, and morphogenesis, contributing to normal dorsal/ventral patterning. Like TGF-beta, BMPs bind to a type II receptor, recruiting a type I receptor unit to activate the Smad signaling pathway.
