Target Information
Bone Morphogenic Proteins (BMPs) are members of the TGF-beta superfamily that regulate bone and cartilage formation. Mature BMPs (30–38 kDa) have a TGF-beta-like cysteine knot structure. BMPs stimulate production of bone matrix proteins and influence stromal cell and osteoclast proliferation. They also play roles in cell proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, and morphogenesis, contributing to dorsal/ventral patterning. BMPs signal through type II and type I receptors, activating the Smad protein pathway.
