Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) family, which is part of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily. This family includes large groups of growth and differentiation factors. BMPs were originally identified by their ability to induce endochondral osteogenesis in vivo. BMP4 plays a key role in the onset of endochondral bone formation in humans. Reduced expression of BMP4 has been linked to various bone diseases, including Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva. Alternative splicing in the 5′ untranslated region of this gene yields three variants, all encoding the same protein.
