Target Information
Ki-67 is a nuclear protein expressed during various stages of the cell cycle, especially in late G1, S, G2, and M phases. It contains a forkhead-associated (FHA) domain that enables association with euchromatin at the perichromosomal layer, centromeric heterochromatin, and nucleolus.
Ki-67 shows cell cycle-dependent localization: perinucleolar in G1, nuclear matrix in G2, and chromosomal during M phase.
It serves as a proliferation marker since it is absent in G0 cells and increases from G1 through mitosis. Ki-67 antibodies help determine cell growth fraction in neoplasms, showing strong correlation between low Ki-67 index and low-grade tumors. Commonly used as a neuronal marker of cell cycling and proliferation.
