Target Information
Laminins are extracellular matrix glycoproteins and major noncollagenous components of basement membranes. They are involved in cell adhesion, differentiation, migration, signaling, neurite outgrowth, and metastasis. Laminins consist of three non-identical chains (alpha, beta, gamma) forming a cruciform structure. The gamma 2 chain encoded by the LAMC2 gene is specifically expressed in epithelial cells of skin, lung, and kidney, forming part of laminin 5 (kalinin). Mutations in LAMC2 are associated with junctional epidermolysis bullosa, a blistering skin disorder. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms of gamma 2 chain have been described, with differential expression in embryonic tissues.
