Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) gene family, part of the immunoglobulin superfamily. Two subgroups of the CEA family, the CEA cell adhesion molecules and the pregnancy-specific glycoproteins, are located within a 1.2 Mb cluster on chromosome 19. Eleven pseudogenes of the CEA cell adhesion molecule subgroup are also found in this cluster.
The encoded protein was initially identified in bile ducts as biliary glycoprotein and later recognized as a cell-cell adhesion molecule expressed on leukocytes, epithelia, and endothelia. It mediates cell adhesion via homophilic and heterophilic interactions with other subgroup proteins. The protein is involved in tissue differentiation, structural organization, angiogenesis, apoptosis, tumor suppression, metastasis, and modulation of immune responses. Multiple transcript variants exist, though not all are fully characterized.
