Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is the fifth component of complement, which plays an important role in inflammatory and cell killing processes. This protein consists of alpha and beta polypeptide chains linked by a disulfide bridge. The activation peptide C5a, an anaphylatoxin with potent spasmogenic and chemotactic activity, is derived from the alpha chain via cleavage with a convertase. The C5b cleavage product forms a complex with the C6 complement component, initiating the membrane attack complex formation. Mutations in this gene cause complement component 5 deficiency, leading to recurrent infections, and are associated with liver fibrosis and rheumatoid arthritis susceptibility.
