Target Information

Azurocidin, also known as heparin-binding protein (HBP), is an inactive homolog of serine proteinases found in granulocytes. Initially thought to act only against gram-negative bacteria, it was later found to be active against gram-positive bacteria and C. albicans.
Azurocidin belongs to the family of polymorphonuclear leukocyte-derived antimicrobial proteins such as defensins, LL-37, and lysozyme. It plays a key role in immune response activation and modulation, acting as an alarm signal for the immune system.
The cationic domain of the protein is essential for antimicrobial activity. It is stored in azurophil and secretory granules and released during early stages of extravasation. Azurocidin is involved in chemotaxis, monocyte activation, cytokine release, and phagocytosis, contributing to efficient bacterial clearance.
Its main targets are endothelial cells and extravascular environments, with interactions mediated via beta 2-integrins. Elevated plasma levels of azurocidin may indicate risk of sepsis development.
