Intercellular Adhesion Molecule-2 (ICAM-2) is a 60 kDa surface glycoprotein that promotes adhesion between immune cells and vascular endothelium. ICAM-2 belongs to the Ig-superfamily with two immunoglobulin-like extracellular domains and is closely related to ICAM-1. ICAM-2 is broadly distributed on hematopoietic cells, with higher expression on resting lymphocytes than ICAM-1. Monocytes express both ICAM-1 and ICAM-2 equivalently, while neutrophils are negative for ICAM-2. Resting vascular endothelial cells express high levels of ICAM-2, as do small clusters of cells in lymphoid tissue germinal centers.
ICAM-2 expression is unaffected by inflammatory cytokines.

Target Information

ICAM-2 is a member of the intercellular adhesion molecule (ICAM) family. These are type I transmembrane glycoproteins containing 2–9 immunoglobulin-like C2-type domains that bind to the leukocyte adhesion protein LFA-1. ICAM-2 may play a role in lymphocyte recirculation by blocking LFA-1-dependent cell adhesion. It mediates adhesive interactions critical for antigen-specific immune responses, NK-cell mediated clearance, and immune surveillance. Several transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
