This antibody recognizes the D1 domain of human CD54 (ICAM-1).
ICAM-1 is a member of the immunoglobulin supergene family and functions as a ligand for LFA-1 (CD11a/CD18), a leukocyte integrin involved in cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions.
It is a single-chain glycoprotein (~55 kDa core) expressed on various cell types including vascular endothelial cells, thymic epithelial cells, fibroblasts, macrophages, activated T-lymphoblasts, B cells, and dendritic cells.

ICAM-1 expression is inducible by inflammatory mediators such as IL-1, TNF, and IFN-γ, and correlates with lymphocyte infiltration into inflammatory lesions. It serves as an early marker of inflammation, often expressed prior to and more strongly than HLA-DR.

Elevated soluble ICAM-1 (sICAM-1) levels have been observed in acute renal graft rejection, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, anterior uveitis, and allergic inflammation.

Target Information

ICAM-1 (CD54) is an 85–110 kDa single-chain type I transmembrane glycoprotein with five extracellular immunoglobulin-like domains, a transmembrane region, and a cytoplasmic tail.
It contains seven potential N-linked glycosylation sites and shares sequence homology with ICAM-2 (CD102) and ICAM-3 (CD50).
ICAM-1 binds to integrins CD11a/CD18 (LFA-1) and CD11b/CD18 (Mac-1) and serves as a receptor for Rhinovirus.

ICAM-1 is expressed on activated endothelial cells, epithelial cells, fibroblasts, chondrocytes, B and T lymphocytes (low), monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells, and neutrophils. Expression increases during inflammation and is also observed in some carcinoma and melanoma cells. Soluble ICAM-1 is detectable in plasma and elevated in various inflammatory conditions.
