Target Information

The Apolipoprotein B mRNA-editing enzyme catalytic polypeptide-like (APOBEC) 3 family includes multiple isoforms of cytidine deaminases acting on monomeric nucleosides and nucleotides.
APOBEC3 plays a major role in cellular defense against retroviral infection. Isoforms APOBEC3G and APOBEC3F can be incorporated into HIV-1 virions, inducing hypermutation in viral DNA and destabilizing the viral genome.
HIV-1 Vif protein counteracts this defense by inducing ubiquitination and degradation of APOBEC3G. A single amino acid substitution (D128K) can block APOBEC3G depletion without affecting its antiviral activity.
