Target Information

High density lipoproteins (HDLs) play a critical role in cholesterol metabolism, with plasma concentrations inversely correlated with atherosclerosis risk. SR-BI and SR-BII (also known as SR-BI.2) are splice variants of a single gene. SR-BII differs from SR-BI in its c-terminal cytoplasmic domain and binds HDLs to mediate selective uptake of HDL cholesteryl ester, though with approximately four-fold lower efficiency than SR-BI.

SR-BII is abundant in mouse tissues expressing SR-BI, including liver, adrenal glands, and testes. Although its role remains partially unclear, SR-BII is suggested to function as an HDL receptor. SR-BII mRNA results from alternative splicing of SR-BI precursor transcripts, with the SR-BII isoform mediating selective lipid transfer between HDL and cells. The differential expression and activity of SR-BI and SR-BII may regulate lipid exchange between HDL and cells.
