Target Information

Lecithin: cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) is a plasma enzyme responsible for most HDL cholesteryl esters in human plasma. In species with cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP), it also contributes to VLDL and LDL cholesteryl ester formation.
LCAT plays a key role in reverse cholesterol transport by facilitating cholesterol movement from peripheral tissues to the liver for excretion.
LCAT deficiency leads to low plasma HDL levels, while transgenic overexpression increases plasma HDL concentrations.
