Target Information
Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme that protects cells against reactive oxygen species (ROS). It catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radicals (O₂⁻) into hydrogen peroxide, which is further converted to water and oxygen by glutathione peroxidase and catalase.
There are several classes of SOD:
- SOD1 (Cu,Zn-SOD): Cytosolic enzyme found in all eukaryotes.
- SOD2 (Mn-SOD): Mitochondrial enzyme located in the matrix near the respiratory chain.
- SOD3 (EC-SOD): Extracellular, mainly in lung and vessel tissues.
- SOD4 (CCS): Copper chaperone for SOD1, delivers Cu cofactor.
