Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the E2F family of transcription factors. The E2F family plays a crucial role in the control of the cell cycle and the action of tumor suppressor proteins. It is also a target of transforming proteins of small DNA tumor viruses. E2F proteins contain conserved domains such as DNA binding, dimerization, transactivation, and tumor suppressor protein association domains. E2F1, along with E2F2 and E2F3, has an additional cyclin-binding domain and preferentially binds to retinoblastoma protein (pRB) in a cell-cycle dependent manner. It can mediate both cell proliferation and p53-dependent or independent apoptosis.
