Target Information

Scn5a is an integral membrane protein and a tetrodotoxin-resistant voltage-gated sodium channel subunit primarily found in cardiac muscle. It is responsible for the initial upstroke of the action potential in an electrocardiogram.
Defects in Scn5a are associated with Long QT Syndrome type 3 (LQT3) and Brugada Syndrome 1.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
Voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs) mediate regenerative cell membrane depolarization and conduction of electrical signals in nerves and muscles.
Scn5a expression is also detected in lymphocytes, glia, and fibroblasts, mediating voltage-dependent sodium ion permeability of excitable membranes.
Channel activity is regulated by intracellular calcium levels and plays a key role in action potential initiation and propagation in excitable cells such as nerve, muscle, and neuroendocrine cells.
