Target Information
The c-Myc protein is a 62 kDa transcription factor encoded by the c-Myc gene on human chromosome 8q24. It is frequently activated in tumor cells and plays a key role in cellular proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and cell cycle progression.
Phosphorylation of c-Myc at Thr58/Ser62 by kinases such as GSK3, CDK, ERK2, and JNK is associated with regulation of proliferation and the cell cycle. c-Myc is essential for vasculogenesis and angiogenesis during tumor development.
The c-myc oncogene (p62 c-myc) regulates normal cell proliferation and differentiation, while deregulated expression can induce apoptosis. Antibodies against c-Myc epitopes recognize Myc-tagged proteins at either amino- or carboxy-termini. c-Myc, N-Myc, and L-Myc proteins are involved in neoplastic processes, and gene amplification has been observed in various human tumors including lung, breast, and colon carcinomas. Translocation of the c-myc locus is characteristic of Burkitt’s lymphoma and other B-cell malignancies. Aberrant c-myc expression is also found in tumors of diverse origins such as colorectal, gastric, hepatic, ovarian, and hematopoietic neoplasms.
