Target Information
Ki-67 is a nuclear protein expressed during various stages of the cell cycle, particularly late G1, S, G2, and M phases. It contains a forkhead-associated (FHA) domain that interacts with euchromatin at the perichromosomal layer, centromeric heterochromatin, and nucleolus.
Ki-67 shows cell cycle-dependent localization—perinucleolar in G1, nuclear matrix in G2, and chromosomal during M phase.
As a proliferation marker, Ki-67 is absent in G0 cells but increases from G1 through mitosis. It helps determine the growth fraction of neoplasms, with a strong correlation between low Ki-67 index and low-grade tumors. Ki-67 is routinely used as a neuronal marker for cell cycling and proliferation.
