Granulocytes are a category of white blood cells characterized by the presence of granules in their cytoplasm. They are also called polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN or PML) due to the lobed structure of their nuclei, typically divided into three segments. The term polymorphonuclear leukocyte often refers specifically to neutrophil granulocytes, the most abundant granulocyte type. These cells are released from the bone marrow under regulation by complement proteins.
