Target Information
Adipose tissue serves as an energy reserve and produces numerous physiologically important proteins such as LPL, leptin, Acrp30, perilipin, and resistin.
Resistin, also known as Adipocyte Secreted Factor (ADSF) and FIZZ3, is a cytokine secreted specifically by adipocytes. Although its function is not fully understood, resistin appears to play paracrine roles and is implicated in type 2 diabetes.
In obese, diabetic mice, serum resistin levels are elevated, antagonizing insulin and contributing to insulin resistance and glucose intolerance.
Resistin gene expression requires C/EBP alpha and coactivators CBP and p300, which acetylate histones at the resistin promoter, activating chromatin for transcription. PPAR gamma and RXR ligands have been shown to downregulate resistin expression in adipocytes.
