Target Information
Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) is a 12–14 kDa protein that forms part of the MHC class I complex. It is expressed on various human cells such as lymphocytes, thymocytes, monocytes, granulocytes, platelets, endothelial and epithelial cells, but absent on erythrocytes.
It also exists freely in plasma and shares homology with the constant regions of immunoglobulin heavy and light chains, featuring a predominantly beta-pleated sheet structure.
B2M is involved in antigen processing and presentation, TCR signaling, and downstream signaling in naive CD8+ cells. It is encoded by the B2M gene on chromosome 15.
Mutations in this gene can lead to hypercatabolic hypoproteinemia.
Beta-2-microglobulin levels are useful for assessing renal function and as a prognostic marker in HIV infection.
