Target Information

Troponin proteins associate with tropomyosin and regulate calcium sensitivity of the striated muscle contractile apparatus. Troponin I (TnI) is the inhibitory subunit that blocks actin-myosin interactions, mediating muscle relaxation.
The TnI subfamily includes three genes:

• TnI-skeletal-fast-twitch
• TnI-skeletal-slow-twitch
• TnI-cardiac

TnI-cardiac is expressed exclusively in cardiac muscle tissue. The encoded Troponin-I-skeletal-slow-twitch protein is expressed in cardiac and skeletal muscle during early development but restricted to slow-twitch skeletal muscle fibers in adults. It prevents muscle contraction by inhibiting calcium-mediated conformational changes in actin-myosin complexes.
