The HSP70 family comprises highly conserved proteins induced by various biological stresses, including heat stress.
Human HSP70 family members include:
- HSP70: Strongly inducible in all organisms; constitutively expressed in primate cells
- HSP72: Induced exclusively under stress conditions
- HSC70 (HSC71, HSC73, HSP73, p72, prp73): Constitutively expressed 72 kDa protein involved in uncoating of clathrin-coated vesicles
- GRP78 (BiP): 78 kDa glucose-regulated protein localized in the endoplasmic reticulum
- p75 (HSP75): 75 kDa mitochondrial protein
HSC70 binds to clathrin light chain loops to promote vesicle uncoating and can associate with the cytoskeleton to facilitate rearrangements. It stimulates lysosomal degradation of intracellular proteins and modulates folding of mitochondrial precursor proteins in vitro.
