This antibody recognizes an extracellular epitope of CD28, a disulfide-linked homodimeric type I glycoprotein (monomer of Mw 44 kDa) which is a critical costimulatory receptor of T cells.
Target Information
CD28 antigen is a 44 kDa disulfide-linked homodimeric T cell–specific surface glycoprotein. It belongs to the immunoglobulin superfamily and is constitutively expressed on most peripheral blood T lymphocytes. CD28 provides essential costimulatory signals for T cell activation by binding CD80 and CD86 on antigen-presenting cells. It also prevents T cells from entering an anergic or apoptotic state. In murine lymphoid organs, CD28 is expressed on all CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. Expression is highest on immature thymocytes and decreases upon maturation. CD28 dysfunction is associated with diseases such as mycosis fungoides and Sezary’s disease.
