Target Information
Prostaglandins are produced by the metabolism of arachidonic acid. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is one of the five physiologically significant prostanoids. Its diverse effects across immune, endocrine, cardiovascular, renal, and reproductive systems are mediated via four receptor subtypes: EP1, EP2, EP3, and EP4.
EP2 receptors are 358-amino-acid G-protein coupled receptors that stimulate adenylyl cyclase through coupling to Gs proteins. They are primarily localized in lung and placental tissues, as well as smooth muscle, and play a key role in smooth muscle contraction and relaxation. In the brain, PGE2 and its receptors are involved in neural function and inflammation regulation.
