Target Information

Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form that accumulates in the cytosol and is cleaved into the active 17 kDa protein upon inflammasome activation.
Inflammasomes trigger caspase-1 activation, which processes pro-IL-1β. IL-1β lacks a signal peptide for the classical ER/Golgi pathway and is secreted through an alternate mechanism.
IL-1β signals via IL-1RI and IL-1RII receptors, shared with IL-1α, and its activity can be inhibited by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA). Elevated IL-1β levels are associated with chronic inflammatory conditions, and neutralizing antibodies have potential therapeutic value.
