Target Information
IFN gamma (Interferon gamma, Type II interferon) is a macrophage activation factor produced primarily by T-lymphocytes and natural killer cells in response to antigens, mitogens, and other cytokines.
It is a dimeric glycoprotein composed of two 146 amino acid subunits (~45 kDa functional homodimer).
On SDS-PAGE, IFN gamma shows 25, 20, and minor 15.5 kDa bands due to differential glycosylation.
Human IFN gamma is highly species specific and does not cross-react with mouse IFN gamma.
Functions include:
- Antiviral and tumor antiproliferative activity
- Induction of class I and II MHC
- Macrophage activation
- Enhanced immunoglobulin secretion by B lymphocytes
- Cytokine regulation and synergy with other cytokines
Activation occurs via IFN gamma receptor I/II and the JAK-STAT pathway.
Human IFN gamma shares ~40% sequence homology with mouse IFN gamma.
Upregulated by IL2, FGF basic, EGF; downregulated by vitamin D3 or DMN.
Mutations in the IFN gamma gene are associated with aplastic anemia.
