Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a membrane-bound homodimeric enzyme localized to the cisternae of the rough endoplasmic reticulum. This enzyme, requiring iron and ascorbate as cofactors, catalyzes hydroxylation of lysyl residues in collagen-like peptides. The resulting hydroxylysyl groups serve as carbohydrate attachment sites in collagen, contributing to the stability of intermolecular crosslinks. Deficiencies in lysyl hydroxylase activity are associated with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type VIB, and mutations in this gene can cause Bruck syndrome. Multiple transcript variants exist due to alternative splicing.
