Target Information
Interferon alpha (IFNα) is a Type I interferon belonging to a family of structurally related, species-specific proteins found in vertebrates. Interaction with its receptor activates signaling pathways involved in innate immune defense against viral infection.
In humans, the IFNα gene is located on chromosome 9 and includes 14 alpha isoforms, along with beta, omega, epsilon, and kappa forms. Homologous molecules are found in many species, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish.
Produced primarily by plasmacytoid dendritic cells, IFNα is a potent antiviral cytokine that also modulates adaptive immunity. Dysregulation is associated with diseases such as Hepatitis C and Hepatitis.
