Target Information
Interferon alpha (IFNα) is a Type I interferon that belongs to a family of structurally related, species-specific proteins found only in vertebrates. IFNα interacts with its receptor to activate signaling pathways involved in innate immune responses against viral infections.
In humans, the IFNα gene is located on chromosome 9 and includes 14 alpha isoforms along with single beta, omega, epsilon, and kappa isoforms. Homologous molecules are present in mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish.
Produced primarily by plasmacytoid dendritic cells, IFNα is a potent antiviral cytokine that also modulates adaptive immunity. Dysregulation of IFNα is associated with diseases such as Hepatitis C and Hepatitis.
