Target Information

Interferon gamma (IFN-γ, Type II interferon) is a macrophage activation factor and immune interferon produced mainly by T-lymphocytes and natural killer cells in response to antigens and cytokines.
It is a dimeric glycoprotein (~45 kDa) composed of two 146 amino acid subunits, appearing as 25, 20, and minor 15.5 kDa bands on SDS-PAGE due to differential glycosylation.
Human IFN-γ shows species specificity and does not cross-react with mouse IFN-γ.
Functions include:

  • Antiviral and tumor antiproliferative activity
  • Induction of MHC class I and II
  • Macrophage activation
  • Enhanced immunoglobulin secretion by B lymphocytes

IFN-γ acts through IFN-γ receptor I and II, activating the JAK-STAT pathway.
It shares ~40% sequence homology with mouse IFN-γ and is regulated by IL2, FGF basic, EGF (upregulated) and vitamin D3 or DMN (downregulated).
Mutations in the IFN-γ gene are associated with aplastic anemia.
