Target Information
Interferon alpha (IFN-α) is a Type I interferon belonging to a family of structurally related, species-specific proteins found in vertebrates. IFN-α interacts with its receptor components to activate multiple signaling pathways involved in the innate immune response against viral infections.
In humans, the IFN-α gene cluster is located on chromosome 9 and includes 14 different alpha isoforms, as well as single beta, omega, epsilon, and kappa isoforms. Homologous molecules exist in many species, including mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish.
IFN-α is mainly produced by plasmacytoid dendritic cells, playing a key role in antiviral defense and modulation of adaptive immunity. Dysfunction of IFN-α is associated with diseases such as Hepatitis C and Hepatitis.
